Slumber HCI Solution 2021
Using the data from a previous information design project, I researched human-computer interaction solutions for improving sleep habits. A common sleep goal among individuals is to create a consistent, healthy sleep schedule. For many adults, inconsistencies can be attributed to school or work-related stress and heightened technology use. My solution was to design a habit forming app that encourages consistent sleep rituals and help limit technology use before bed time.
Personal Project
The lack of a routine causes problems with one’s ability to fall asleep at earlier times because the bodies circadian rhythm is out of sync.
Problem #1 : Irregularity
Separating work from home and an increased use of social media can have a physical and mental impact on one’s ability to fall asleep.
Problem #2 : Technology Use
Knowledge of one’s sleep drive is important to determine ideal bed time and wake-up time.
Solution #1 : Knowledge
Goal setting can be done through consistency. Creating a routine will help program the body to sleep and wake up at certain times.
Solution #2 : Consistency
While designing the user interface, I knew it was important to invoke the feeling of calmness that we attribute to winding down for sleep. I tried to use darker colors and soft edges.
Design Experimentations
Upon designing the visuals for the app, I researched possible features that would be beneficial to include for achieving the goal of building healthier sleep habits.
